Wild Planet Seafood

Posted on

This time of year, Lent is underway for most.  Since meat is a common food that people tend to give up for the season, I thought it was PERFECT when Wild Planet Foods contacted me about their unique TUNA and SARDINES.  In my nutrition class, not too long ago, our professor introduced us to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch® Program, which I was totally intrigued by.    She showed us the “pocket guide” that we could refer to when considering mercury in different types of seafood.  When the Wild Planet Company was noted as Best Choices for sustainability by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch® program I knew it had to be a credible company.

Imagine opening a can of tuna that has no water or oil to drain, has 600% more natural Omega 3 than any big three tuna brand and less than half the mercury levels because only smaller, individually-caught Pacific Northwest Albacore are used. This is a deliciously different tuna. Even the cans are special; they’re BPA-free.

Unlike mainstream brands, sustainably-fished Wild Planet Albacore Tuna contains a whole tuna steak, hand-packed and cooked only once in the can to capture the fresh, natural flavor and to retain six times the valuable Omega-3 as conventional brand albacore tuna. Packed with no additional water, oil, preservatives or chemicals, there is 45% more great tasting tuna by weight as well.  Most seafood is high in sodium, but you can even find these cans without extra added salt!

We believe our Wild Albacore is helping tuna make a comeback,” says Wild Planet Foods’ CEO Terry Hunt. “For consumers who are wary of buying tuna due to its bland taste and concern over mercury levels, Wild Planet Albacore offers an exceptional tasting, eco-conscious and healthier alternative in a category long dominated by three behemoth brands.”

They’ve got a very strict quality control from fishhook to store shelf and their main mission is to produce safe, nutritious, great-tasting, and sustainably fished seafood. I loved that Wild Planet Seafood is 100% US owned! Based in McKinleyville, CA, the company operates its own docks where selection and delivery of fish are taken directly from the fishermen, many of whom are also shareholders with the company. Wild Planet cans more than just tuna, though…They’ve got Albacore, Skipjack, Shrimp, Salmon and Sardines, whic are individually caught in their natural environment!

Can’t think of any ways you could incorporate these nutrient dense products into your daily diet?  Let me broaden your horizons 😉  There are TONS of ways to concoct delicious and healthy lunches, dinners, and snacks using this stuff!

These cute little appetizers are perfect for parties!  They’re packed with protein from the fish, fiber from the beans, and healthy fats from the olive oil!  They’ve got a ton of other combinations you can try on their website, too!  Personally, I like to mix mine with a white wine Grey Poupon mustard and top a salad with it or spread it on a sandwich!  ❤

Thanks again, Wild Planet and Shaina for giving me the opportunity to try them out!

  1. That’s cool! I still don’t eat fish, (but I know a lot of vegetarians do!) but it looks like a really cool company 🙂

  2. That’s cool that you got to find this brand! It looks great and so does that recipe (love tuna!!) I never eat swordfish because of the high mercury, but some foods really trick you how much they hold!
