VixiBars – The Natural Sweetness of Life

Posted on

It’s safe to say that I probably wouldn’t be making it through this semester without the help of bars.  A healthy carb to protein ratio is highly important, along with the ingredients list for bars, in my opinion…and taste?  That’s probably priority #1 🙂  A bar that’s got it all?  Hard to find…I’m pretty picky…  Especially when you’re the kind of girl who needs a little variety.

When Vixibar gave me the opportunity to review four of their varieties, I was eccstatic, to say the least…the same old Dr. Carbrite bars were getting old.  If you’re not craving one of these flavors by the end of this post, you’re probably inhuman…especially since it’s almost lunchtime 😉

Apple Crisp, Peppermint Patty, Peanut Butter Cup, PB &J, Chocolate Macaroon, Pumpkin Pie, Coconut Bliss, Cherry Biscotti, Cherry Brownie, and Peanut Butter Banana.

[source]

Basically, each of these DESSERT tasting bars is made with wholesome ingredients (NO SUGAR ADDED), without preservatives, contain 12g of protein, a healthy dose of fiber, and are gluten, lactose & soy free (great for all of you with thyroid issues like myself!).

I should’ve known they were going to be something special after reading this little note on the webpage from Kate, the creator.  You see, she’s an athlete, herself, so she knows what it takes to create the perfect bar for people like me.

Here are my favorites, in order.

Apple Crisp (11/10)

Never in a million years could have I imagined that this bar would taste exactly like apple pie…but it did.  I’m sure glad these are individually wrapped bars, because I would have a definite problem with portion control, had they not been.  As you can see in the stats, 230 calories with just 0.5g saturated far, 12g of natural sugar from the fruit, and 12g of protein from whey.

Seriously, this Christmas, skip the apple pie and nosh on one of these bars.  You’ll thank me.

Cherry Biscotti aka Cherry Pie (10/10)

This was similar to a Cherry Pie Larabar, except I love the fact that these have so much more protein in them than Larabars.  Not only that, they’re actually larger in size.

The calorie content is just about the same, and the only ingredient difference is the whey, really.  Both have healthy fats, and have no added sugar.  The sweetness of the dates (nature’s candy!) is perfectly balanced by the tartness of the dried cherries.

Chocolate Macaroon  (10/10)

Chocolate and coconut will forever be one of my favorite combinations.  This bar brough me back to the day I got to review Hail Merry Macaroons

I think, this weekend, I’m going to have to make some of Katie’s Coconut Almond Macaroons and add some Cocoa Cardio (a new, recent purchase!) to try to recreate this bar!  The flavors are spot on.

Peanut Butter & Jelly (8/10)

Here’s the thing…the only reason I subtracted a point from this flavor, was because I LOVE a good peanut butter & jelly sandwich.  Preferably with peanut flour, and sugar-free strawberry jam.  The salty sweet combo of the peanuts and the fruit is one of the best!  Buuuuut, in this flavor, I couldn’t taste much of the fruit at all…I think they would’ve been better off adding CHERRIES rather than RAISINS to this one…and maybe adding a little bit of salt?  It was good, but just tasted like plain, old peanut butter.  Still love the stats, though!

I want to say thank you SO much to Kate & Vixibar for sending me these four to review!  I’d reallly love to try the peanut butter banana, coconut bliss, and pumpkin pie flavors!!  They sound MIND blowing.  Shop for them online, here!  Instead of sending someone cookies for Christmas, try some Vixibars!  Just go to their site and click “shop”  you can have them delivered right to their door!  You can also find them on Facebook & Twitter for special deals!

Stonehouse 27 & Lundberg Rice Killer Combo

Posted on

While packing lunches and eating on the run most days, nutritious meals can become monotonous.  You know, the same old chopped salad only looks appealing for so many days in a row before I get bored and unappetized.

Sometimes, it’s hard to get creative for new and delicious meals that are also nutritious and made with wholesome ingredients, which is why I was thrilled at the chance to create my own “killer combo” courtesy of Lundberg Family Farms & Stonehouse 27 companies.

Here’s a little background info on each:

Lundberg Family Farms® is a family-owned and operated rice company that is committed to producing the finest quality rice and rice products for your family. The Heat & Eat Brown Rice Bowls are quick, convenient, healthy brown rice that cooks perfect every time. Just Heat & Eat! It’s ready in seconds making it easy to get your daily servings of whole grains. It can be served as a side dish or used as a base in your favorite rice recipes. Lundberg’s Heat & Eat Bowls are available in 3 popular rice varieties: Short Grain Brown, Long Grain Brown and Countrywild®.

Stonehouse 27 was born in 2008 from Sharon Fernandez’s desire to bring delicious, all-natural sauces from her homeland to kitchens around the world. Stonehouse 27 sauces are rich with exotic spices, delicious aromas and magical flavors. They’re always made with fresh herbs and produce and do not contain anything artificial. These all natural sauces bring authentic flavors to the table, have many diverse uses, and are vegan, gluten free and contain less than 25mg of sodium per serving. They feature healthful, flavorful, premium ingredients such as pure agave nectar, expeller pressed canola oil and California dates. Stonehouse 27 has six delicious sauces: Tamarind & Garlic, Tomato & Chilies, Cilantro & Coconut, Dates & Tamarind, Cashews & Cream, and Spicy Cashews & Cream

For the challenge, we had to come up with a combo of our choice of one of the heat & eat rice bowls, along with one of Stonehouse 27’s delicious looking sauces.  I had a hard time choosing between several of them but ended up with:

Tomato & Chilies

sautéed onions, garlic, spices and agave nectar

+

Organic Short Grain Brown Rice

I’m pretty sure there’s nothing that you couldn’t add to this dish and it would be outstanding…I mean, the sauce in itself is enough to flavor anything wonderfully.  Here’s my recipe:

  1. Organic Short Grain Brown Rice
  2. Tomato & Chilies Stonehouse 27 Sauce
  3. 1 Eggland’s Best Egg
  4. 1 Bag of steamable broccoli slaw

I just tossed all the ingredients together (after microwaving the egg, of course), and devoured.  AMAZING how just four ingredients can come together for an awesome recipe.  You can find these sauces & ricebowls at local retailers almost anywhere!  Check out their websites to find the closest to you!

So, here’s the fun part.  I get to choose 5 winners to receive their choice of 1 sauce + 1 rice bowl so they can create their very own killer combo!

Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me which sauce + rice bowl you would choose and what 5 or less ingredient killer combo you would make with them.
  2. Like Stonehouse 27 & Lundberg Farms on Facebook & leave a comment here telling me you have.

Stonyfield Activia

Posted on

If you’ve been in the blog world for a hot minute, you’ve noticed that most healthy living bloggers are huge fans of greek yogurt…I for one, consider myself to be one of those people.  Stonyfield’s version, Oikos can be found in my refrigerator almost all the time, making a quick and convenient, easily packable snack for work or school.

Recently, the company contacted me about an exciting new product that they’ve decided to add to their line called Stonyfield Activia.  It is packed with an  exclusive probiotic culture called Bifidus Regularis® (Bifidobacterium lactis DN-173 010).  According to Stonyfield, “clinical studies show that Bifidus Regularis – an exclusive type of probiotic found only in Activia – survives passage through the digestive system and arrives in the gut, which is where Activia provides its benefit. Activia can help naturally regulate your digestive system when eaten daily for two weeks as part of a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet.”

Like all of Stonyfield’s other yogurts, Activia is made with organic milk, which seperates it from the Dannon version, supporting 180,000 farm acres free of toxic, persistent pesticides and other agricultural chemicals.

Just as the other Stonyfield yogurts, Activia is a great source of calcium, providing 20% of your daily value, and protein, providing 10% of your daily value.

These little yogurt cups can be found in both Strawberry and Vanilla flavors, one as equally creamy & delicious as the other and are just 90 calories a pop.

Check out the 240 mg of potassium!  Stonyfield is just showing off now 😉

Check them out!

Solo Bars

Posted on

I know that many of you guys, like me, are taking college classes while trying to maintain an active lifestyle along with working full-time jobs.  It isn’t easy keeping balanced and preparing meals, especially when you want to fuel a good workout without having your tummy rumble throughout your entire class afterward.  I need quick and easy fuel to keep me satisfied, my energy levels even, and help my muscles repair themselves.

That being said, Solo Bars have come to the rescue on numerous occasions, when I haven’t had time to pick up take out, or pack up some nutritious eats.  They’re so convenient, yet contain the perfect ratios of protein to carbohydrate…not to mention a low glycemic index score (23-29).

See, here’s how it works…The company uses Controlled Energy Response Technology (slow-burning carbs, protein, dietary fat and fiber) making them ideal for me to use before a big basketball game, or an intense training session :

They come in five flavors: Lemon Lift, Berry Bliss, Peanut Power, Chocolate Charger, and Mint Mania.

All of which, I would vouch for being absolutely delicious.

The Chocolate Charger was probably my favorite, with Peanut Power coming in a close second.

When it comes to bars like these, I prefer chocolate rather than fruit flavor…which is why I ranked the Mania Mint my #3 choice.

Yeah.  I think the pictures says it all as far as the taste.  It was like a fudgy, rich brownie with a touch of crunch from the soy crisps.

The protein blend is made up of whey & soy, as you can see in the ingredients list:

ALLLL recognizable and approved 😉

Which leads me to the nutrition facts.  Lately, I’ve been much more concerned with ingredients than calories, because if you choose the right foods and serving sizes, the nutrition facts even out.

Like I said, the ingredients are winners, so the nutrition facts obviously follow their lead. 200 calories, 7g of fat (3 sat.), 11g protein, 4g fiber.  The 17g of sugar really isn’t bad considering they’re made for energizing, and they contain dates, dried plums, and grape juice concentrate , which undoubtedly supply a lot of natural sugars.

If you’d like to try them, you can order them online here: http://www.solo-gi.com/purchase_online.htm (wordpress won’t let me link the word?!)

A big thanks goes out to Jeff from the company for being so patient with this review and for sending me a few of the bars to try out!

Enjoy Life Foods – NEW Crunchy Cookies

Posted on

Yet another successful newbie in the Enjoy Life Foods family…I present to you, CRUNCHY COOKIES.

In four different varieties, ranging from 110-120 calories per two-cookie serving, I’d say that these cookies will do the least amount of damage to your diet as possible.  Not to mention, they’re safe for those of you leading the dairy, nut, or gluten-free lifestyles.

Now, how do they measure up, tastewise, you might ask?

If you’re expecting a dense, doughy cookie, you may be disappointed.  I realized going into the taste test that obviously, judging by the name, these were not going to be your typical, warm from the oven, gooey cookies.  Rather, they are light, crispy and delicious.

Each of these cookies was yummy all on their own, but if you need to spruce them up a bit, I decided to get creative and list some other ways you can enjoy them each!

If you haven’t realized it yet, I do play favorites.  Of course, my sweet tooth spoke, and the Double Chocolate Crunchy cookies won me over at first bite.  More often than not, I’ve experienced the sad story of a disappointing 100-calorie cookie…about the size of my thumb nail…not these!  They didn’t skimp on the mini chocolate chips, either, which I loved.

Try them
Layer the following in order: Vanilla greek yogurt, sugar-free chocolate pudding, and 2 crumbled Double Chocolate Crunchy cookies.  Top with Cool Whip free and sugar-free chocolate syrup.  (Dirt pudding, anyone?!)

Second fave was the Vanilla Honey Graham.  Anyone remember those Nabisco Teddy Grahams?  I personally, used to eat them like they were going out of style.  I couldn’t get enough!  These remind me a lot of those, flavor-wise.  The cookies do tend to crumble a little bit easier than your typical cookie, but the well-packaged goodies arrived in the mail fully in-tact!  I was impressed.

Try them: Use a sugar-free hot chocolate packet, thinned with just enough water to make a paste, sandwich it between two Vanilla Honey Graham cookies with a few mini marshmallows! (Guilt-free s’mores!)

The Sugar Crisp variety reminded me of a snickerdoodle, more-so than a sugar cookie.  Probably because of the texture, mainly. Have you guys been checking out the ingredients lists below the nutrition facts?  I love that they’re made with a mix of white rice flour, millet flour, and buckwheat flour.  The wholesome ingredients list is such a turn on 😉

Try them: Sandwich style, with peanut flour paste (1/4 C. peanut flour, 1 packet Truvia/Splenda, salt to taste, water to thin)  in the middle.  The salty peanut combined with the sugary cookie is an AWESOME combination.  You can add some sugar-free strawberry jam if you’re feeling frisky.

Last but certainly not least, is the classic Chocolate Chip Crunchy cookie.  Personally, these were last on my list, only because I enjoy the texture of the original chocolate chip cookies…toll house style…ya feel me?  You know what I’m talking about. Dough. Goo. Warmth.  But hey, they’re still tasty…Heck, my sisters had a hayday with this box (and they’re pretty tough critics, considering they buy frozen chocolate chip cookie dough and eat it straight up!)

Try them: Freeze them with sugar-free vanilla ice cream in the middle! A simple, refreshing, fun-to-eat snack for only about 200 calories (if you use 1/2 C. sugar-free ice cream)

I can’t say thank you enough to the company who sent them to me for the review.  Alina is one of the sweetest PR people I’ve ever worked with & Enjoy Life Foods is incredibly generous as a company overall.

Chocolate For Everyone From Enjoy Life Foods

Posted on

Calling all readers! 🙂  My favorite gluten-free company has added MORE impressive (and delicious!) products to their family of Enjoy Life Foods.

May I present to you, Semi-Sweet Mega  Chocolate Chunks

Never again will you have to miss out on the goodness of a homemade chocolate chip cookie, being that these are dairy, nut, and soyfree!  I know it’s hard to imagine, but they taste JUST like the classic version…possibly even better

They’re also yummy to throw into a trail mix in place of m&m’s or simply eat straight from the bag!  You can basically use them any way you would chocolate chips!

Next up, Double Chocolate Granola!  Who in their right mind would pass up something with a name like that?

This stuff is phenomonal ontop of vanilla or strawberry greek yogurt!  You can also use it as an indulgent topping for banana soft serve!

Annnnd less than 4g of fat per serving?!  That’s my kinda chocolate 😉

You won’t find gluten, dairy, or nuts in this bag of goodness, either!

Every single ingredient is recognizable.  Kuddos to you, Enjoy Life Foods!  Thanks for making such awesome, delicious products that EVERYONE can enjoy, and thank YOU Alina for giving me the opportunity to try them!  🙂

Check them out on Facebook and Twitter!  They’ve even got their own blog!

Girard’s Premium Dressings Review & Giveaway!

Posted on

A company of

has paired with Epicurious and asked me if I’d be interested in teaming up to feature some of their NEW salad dressings on the blog!  They sent me a few to try including Apple Poppyseed, Creamy Light Balsamic, Champagne, and Peach Mimosa!  Talk about flavors of SUMMER.  Thanks so much, Girard’s!

Girard’s is a premium quality line of dressings that was created in San Francisco by Chef Pierre Girard in 1939. Chef Girard started with a recipe for Original French dressing, and gradually added varieties. Girard’s dressings gained prominence for their premium quality and distinctive triangular bottle. Look for Girard’s in the specialty dressing section of your supermarket.

Each of the flavors had a light and delightful appealAs the description says, each came in a cute, triangular, gourmet-looking glass bottle with a gold-foiled twist-off cap.

I’d have to say that the Light Balsamic was easily the best nutritionally speaking in comparison to the others.

The other dressings, Apple Poppyseed

Peach Mimosa,

and Champagne, had stats that were a little less than impressive, but in the taste department?  They were SPOT on.

Obviously, having REGULAR salad dressing every now and then is not going to do any damage to the diet, especially since you don’t need a lot of it for a HUGE flavor punch!

My recommendations?

Light Balsamic- This stuff is a guilt-free version of the classic, creamy indulgence.  Make your own caprese salad with fresh mozzarella cheese and fresh sliced farmer’s market tomatoes with a little basil.  TRUST me.  You’ll love it!

Champagne- This particular Girard’s wonder is subtly sweet combining white wine vinegar and a blend of spices that pair perfectly with sliced beet & goat cheese salads!

Apple Poppyseed-  The apple juice concentrate and molasses really shine through in this sweet, fruity dressing.  A hint of onion off-sets the sweetness to prevent it from becoming overwhelming on the palate.  This is amazing drizzled on shredded cabbage and carrots (coleslaw mix) with chunks of chicken breast and mandarin oranges!  The tiny poppyseeds that were detectable gave the salad a nice crunchy texture.

Peach Mimosa- Vinaigrette’s always seem to hit the spot for me.  It’s like they do the best job of playing up the natural vegetable flavors in the salad.  This version was no exception!  The peach juice concentrate and distilled vinegar combined create a terrific duo that tastes delicious on neutral vegetables like cucumber and green pepper in salads!

Girard’s Premium Dressings come in a HUGE variety of other flavors too!  Check out the FAM 🙂

    SeaPak Salmon Burgers

    Posted on

Did you know that 91% of American children are not eating the recommended amount of seafood?   One nationally recognized dietician, Elizabeth Ward, stated that “Seafood is one of the greatest super foods on the planet, and children should be eating more of it”.  Being an excellent source of protein is only one of the many assets of incorporating seafood into your diet.  It also provides omega-3 fatty acids necessary for brain development and vision, and supplies essential vitamins like B12 and D, along with important nutrients!

With SeaPak’s frozen seafood products, these nutrients & benefits are made affordable and easy-to-make with a long shelf life with little waste.  They kindly sent me some of their new Salmon Burgers to review for the blog, which I was thrilled about!  They also make Butterfly Shrimp, Popcorn Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, Specialty Shrimps (like coconut, alfredo, & tempura), and other seafood like Tilapia, Crab Cakes, Seasoned Ahi Tuna Steaks, and Roasted Garlic Encrusted Flounder!

    Check out these nutritionals!

Each serving of one whole salmon burger packs 18 grams of protein into just 110 calories!  These burgers are nicely sized, too!  Thick & hearty, unlike the flimsy “100 calorie” wanna-be’s!  And just .5g of saturated fats?!  Awesome.

I used mine to make things like

    salmon stir-fry.

    salmon salad.

    broccoli slaw & salmon.

The flavor is seriously explosive.  It tastes great with ANYTHING…especially veggies.  I prefer mine with some sort of asian fusion, like soy sauce sweetened with Splenda or SF syrup!  The website also has lots of tasty recipes that you can try out for each product!

Absolutely one of my favorites.  You’ve got to get your hands on some SeaPak!  Find out here on the website where you can find some in a grocery store near you.

Easy Lunch Boxes Review & Giveaway!

    Posted on

Thank you SO much to Kelly and Easy Lunch Boxes for sending me some sweeet lunch packing tools for my review!

If you’re a “packer” like myself, or you have children to provide lunches for, you’ve GOT to get yourself some of these.  They have changed the way I do lunch & saved me an incredible amount of time and energy, two things I KNOW you guys could use a little more of 😉

Each container has three compartments, one large and two smaller.  The large one is best for entrees…I, of course, used it for my veggies because we all know I always pack a BOATLOAD of them.

    feast!

I love how they stack right on top of each other, taking up a minimal amount of space in the lunch box!  The website says they’re actually NOT leak-proof, and that you shouldn’t put “wet” food in them, but my homemade honey mustard held up just fine!  No leakage at all, due to the stable stacking of the containers, which held everything upright!

    all packed up!

Not only is it great for portion control, but it also helps reduce the amount of dishes that need to be washed when I get home from work!  Check out the comparison!  They’re even DISHWASHER, FREEZER, REFRIGERATOR & MICROWAVE SAFE!

    before.

I used to have several containers in my lunch bag, all shoved into my tiny pink lunch tote, which left me with numerous containers to scrub or jam into the dishwasher.

    after.

Now, it’s as easy as this!  Just three equal sized containers! Which easily slide into the dishwasher, leaving SO much more room for other plates and dirty dishes.   Literally, the easiest lunch box system you’ll find out there.

    cute colors, too!

Being eco-friendly is another asset that these Easy Lunch Boxes put on the table.  No more wasting ziplock baggies for sandwiches & wraps!  They’re BPA-free, phthalate-free, and non-toxic lunch boxes.

They came in this perfectly-sized cooler, which can easily fit two or three of the food trays!  With two of the trays, I could even fit an ice pack inside!  They even come in cute colors like Olive, Purple, Aqua, Dark Red, and Black.

On the website, they’ve got all kinds of creative ideas for packed lunches that you can make at home!  With FREE SHIPPING on orders over $50, you can order them online, too!  They’ve even got a new low price on the pack of 4 containers just for you!

The generous people at Easy Lunch Boxes have ALSO offered to host a giveaway for ONE lucky FRECKLED FOODIE winner to receive their very own Easy Lunch Box systemWant to enter?
